Just like the commercial says, "Carpet - Nothing looks like it, feels like it, performs like it." The use of carpet and rugs in a home can be a source of comfort, beauty and warmth for you and your pet.
Not only is carpet
a key decorative element but is also very practical, too. It insulates,
reducing heating costs, softens sound by absorbing noise, provides a
cushioning layer of protection and comfort, and is easy to maintain.
Proper maintenance of your carpet will prolong its life and retain its fresh appearance. The following basic maintenance tips will help you preserve your carpet and rug purchases.
Walk-off mats:
Properly placed at the entrances of your home, door mats or walk-off mats stop a tremendous amount of soil from entering your home. This tip may be common sense but it goes a long way to minimize dirt particles being tracked onto the carpet and reduce soil accumulation. Most walk-off mats can be easily washed or replaced at a fraction of the cost of carpet replacement.
Vacuuming:
Microscopic dirt particles have sharp edges and are very abrasive. Continuous walking on soiled carpet without proper vacuuming can permanently damage the texture of the fibers. It is essential that you vacuum regularly with a strong, well-functioning vacuum cleaner. It is recommended to vacuum at least twice a week in heavy traffic areas. A good vacuum cleaner features a strong motor or dual motors with strong suction; beater bars; a high-efficiency filtration and internally housed vacuum bag; and correct brush height adjustment. Vacuuming has many benefits. Not only will damaging soil particles be removed but the number of allergens such as pet hair will be reduced as well.
Spot Removal:
Regardless of the source, all spills and pet accidents should be cleaned up immediately. Act quickly. It pays always to keep a bottle of Simple Solution® Stain & Odor Remover handy. The longer you leave the spill unattended, the more difficult it will be to remove.
Effectively removing spots on carpet requires patience and careful attention. For liquid spills, blot the area with a dry, white absorbent cloth or white (no printing) paper towel. Do not rub the area! Rubbing can cause fiber distortion in the affected area. Continue to blot until the area is completely dry. Then apply Simple Solution® Stain & Odor Remover.
For semi-solid spills gently scrape up with a rounded spoon. On dry spills, vacuum until completely removed. Adding moisture to a dry spill may create additional problems.
